Micro needling is here

Maybe you’ve heard about micro needling on a TV show or read about it in a magazine and wondered what the fuss is all about.   Well, here’s a little information about what it is and why we are so excited to add it to our list of services.

What is micro needling?

Micro needling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is performed using a device – we use Rejuvapen – with 9 adjustable surgical-grade stainless steel needles to create thousands of micro channels in the skin.  This process stimulates the skin’s natural response to healing thereby promoting the production of collagen and elastin (which means healthier, younger-looking skin).

What is micro needling for?

It may sound too good to be true, but micro needling works for aging-skin issues such as fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, sun damage and hyperpigmentation.  It can be used to treat the face, the hands and the decollete.  It’s also great for acne scars, surgical scars and stretch marks.  And because, unlike lasers, micro needling doesn’t produce heat, it works on all skin types.

What is the downtime?

After the procedure- which usually takes 30 minutes to one hour – your skin will look as if you have a sunburn and your skin will be dry and feel tight.  We recommend that you take the rest of the day off and stay out of the sun.  The next day, most of the redness will have subsided – although some patients stay a little pink for a couple of days – and you can pretty much go back to your daily activities – just make sure you wear the sunscreen that comes in your post procedure packet.

How many treatments are required?

The number of micro needling treatments varies from patient to patient.  Many people notice that their skin looks better almost immediately.  And although one treatment is beneficial, multiple treatments (3 to 6) are recommended depending on the issues you want to address.

Needless to say, we are delighted to share this service with our patients.  If you have questions or would like to schedule a consultation to learn more about what micro needling can do for you, please call our office.

Tax Refunds for Plastic Surgery?

tax-refund

April 15th (or April 18th this year) has come and gone, and hopefully any tax-related stress is behind you.  Did you get a refund (or have you already received it)?  If so, lucky you.  Now the big question is, “what are you going to do with it?”.

A recent article from Forbes magazine, discusses what average Americans will be using their refunds for – savings accounts, debt reduction and, yes, even plastic surgery.

The average refund comes in at just under $3000.00, so major cosmetic surgeries won’t be fully paid for (our breast augmentation surgery costs $5600.00), but the extra cash can certainly help. And if surgery isn’t what you had in mind, there are always non-invasive treatments like Botox, Juvederm, Voluma, Kybella and chemical peels.

Many of our patients see spring as a good time to do something for themselves.  The weather begins to warm, the layers of clothing start to come off, and swimsuit season is just around the corner.  So if you’ve been wondering about plastic surgery, and if you’re getting a little bit of cash back from Uncle Sam, it’s a perfect time to schedule that consultation.

Breast Augmentation is #1

0094

The numbers are in, and for 2015, Breast Augmentation tops the list as the most performed cosmetic surgery in the United States. With a whopping 279,143 procedures performed, breast augmentation maintained its long-running number one spot ahead of liposuction (with 222,051 surgeries performed).  Rounding out the top five are 3) rhinoplasty or nose surgery, 4) blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery and 5) tummy tuck.

Breast augmentation uses breast implants (either saline or silicone gel) to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breasts.  And it’s no wonder that it continues to be so popular.  Our patients who have undergone this procedure often say that they feel more self-confident and have an improved self-image.  A breast augmentation can help balance out a woman’s figure as well as increase the fullness and projection of the breasts – especially after volume loss as a result of pregnancy or weight loss.

If you’d like to learn more about breast augmentation, we invite you to schedule your free consultation and sizing appointment.  Give us a call at 706.543.0404 and ask to speak with Katie Garmon, our patient care coordinator.

Cheeks, Chin & Beautiful Skin

Cheeks, Chin & Beautiful Skin

Join us on Tuesday, April 26th to learn more about Voluma (cheeks), Kybella (chin) and our SkinMedica Products (beautiful skin).

Wrinkles and lines aren’t the only signs of aging. Over time, the cheeks flatten, and the skin may begin to sag. This is caused by a natural loss of volume in the cheek area, or what the experts call age-related midface volume loss. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift and contour the cheek area. It’s a great way to combat sagginess and give your face a “lift” without surgery.

KYBELLA is the nonsurgical solution to put an end that double chin – and it’s a great way to look fabulous in all those selfies.  The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.  When injected into the fat beneath your chin, KYBELLA® causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. Most patients require two to three sessions for optimal results.

SkinMedica® professional skin care products are the result of almost two decades of research and clinical experience. SkinMedica scientists are continually working on new formulations and clinically testing our products to provide the next breakthrough in skin care. Our staff love these products – especially the new HA5 which provides immediate smoothing in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and supports the skin’s natural ability to replenish its own hyaluronic acid (HA) for overall skin health.

Appointments are available from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm, but space is limited so call us at 706.543.0404 to reserve your time.  All attendees will receive special pricing on Voluma, Kybella and our SkinMedica products.

How Important is Sunscreen?

sunscreen parker plastic surgeryLabor Day has come and gone, but just because summer is over, it doesn’t mean you should stop wearing your sunscreen.  This video has been receiving a lot of attention on the web, and we thought we would share it with our patients as a sort of public service announcement. Watch these people as they see their skin under an ultraviolet camera – with and without sunscreen. This powerful clip will make you want to slather on your sunscreen every single day if you don’t already.  And if you need SPF recommendations, we can help!

Can You Tan Safely?

sunscreen

“I look better with a tan.”

“Getting a little color can’t hurt.”

Summer is still in full swing, and we all spend a lot of time in the sun.  There are many things people say to justify a tan, but the truth is that sun damage is cumulative and can lead to premature aging of the skin and even skin cancer. Because UVA/UVB rays break down the collagen proteins in our skin, we develop wrinkles, lose volume and the skin begins to sag.

Too much exposure to the sun can also be dangerous.  UVA/UVB rays are a form of radiation which damage the DNA of skin cells.  When the DNA of keratinocytes is damaged, the result is a basal cell or squamous cell skin cancer.  When the DNA of melanocytes is damaged, you can develop melanoma.

If you want a “safe” tan, use self tanners or get a spray tan.  Just remember that self-tanners don’t provide any protection from the sun, so be sure you apply your sunscreen.

Is Liposuction for You?

lipo illustration parker plastic surgery

If you’re considering liposuction, you’ve probably already tried dieting and exercise, but you’re still bothered by some aspect of your shape.  Liposuction is an outpatient surgery performed to produce a permanent improvement in the contour and proportion of the treated areas – most commonly the abdomen, hips and thighs.

Here are some tips that can help you determine if you are a good candidate for liposuction.

Good candidates

  • will have disproportionate areas of fat on his or her body.
  • will have localized pockets of fat deposits.
  • would like more definition or a sleeker contour.
  • will have good skin elasticity.

Poor candidates

  • are looking to tighten their skin.
  • have “stretched” skin.
  • are looking for a replacement for diet and exercise.
  • have had unstable weight over the past year.

Of course, the best way to find out if liposuction is the best option for you is to schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon.  He or she will be able to talk with you about your lifestyle, your goals for surgery and the procedure or combination of procedures that will give you the best result.

How Do You Measure Up?

Measuring bust sizeDid you know that 8 out of 10 women wear the wrong size bra?  It may be the wrong band size.  It may be the wrong cup size.  Or it may be a combination of both.  And while it’s best to have the help of a bra-fit specialist when purchasing a bra, they aren’t always available.  In any case, with the help of a mirror and our list of some key points, you can determine if your bra is the wrong size.

  • Spillage  If your breasts are “spilling” out of the top or sides of your bra, you probably need to find a bigger band and cup size.  Your bra should cover the entire breast area.
  • Puckering Cups  If your cups pucker or crinkle, your bra is too big for your breasts
  • The High Back  Your bra should fit straight across the back without riding up or being in a permanent arch.
  • Sagging Breasts  Your bra is designed to support your breast and keep them from sagging.  If this isn’t the case, you need a new bra.
  • Poking Wires  If the wires of your bra are poking you, there’s a good chance your bra is too big.  When your bra is the right size, your bra will lie firmly against your body to support your breasts.
  • Bra Strap Grooves  If your straps are leaving red marks, chances are your bra is too small or just too tight.  Adjust your straps as needed or find a new bra that fits better.
  • Discomfort  Perhaps the biggest indicator of a poorly-fitting bra is discomfort.  A bra that fits you well should flatter your shape and be comfortable.
